Film Info: 2020, 12A. 1hr 55m. American
Steven Yeun and Yeri Han are Jacob and Monica Yi, an immigrant Korean couple who relocate from California to a large plot in the Ozarks with “the best dirt in America”. For Jacob, it’s his dream – the chance to escape the monotony of sexing chickens for a living and to make something of himself. Monica is more sceptical, appalled by the leaky mobile home into which this reckless venture has placed them. A farming novice, her husband must learn the ropes from scratch, aided only by their eccentric neighbour Paul (Will Patton), a Korean-war veteran and religious fanatic who speaks in tongues, performs makeshift exorcisms and spends his Sundays dragging a cross up the local highway.

FRÉWAKA
Director: Aislinn Clarke
Cast: Clare Monnelly, Bríd Ní Neachtain, Alexandra Bustryzhickaya
Film Info: 2024, 103 mins, Ireland.
Haunted by a personal tragedy, home care worker Shoo (Clare Monnelly) leaves her pregnant girlfriend to care for Peig (Bríd Ní Neachtain), a cantankerous old woman who has incarcerated herself in a big house on the edge of a remote village. Peig fears the neighbours as much as she fears na sídhe, sinister entities who she believes abducted her on her wedding night decades before. As the two develop a deep connection, Shoo is infected by the old woman’s paranoia, rituals, and superstitions, eventually confronting the horrors of her own past.
Aislinn Clarke’s haunting folk horror is deftly woven through with contemporary concerns about mental health, inherited trauma, and the fraught realm of motherhood, as they impact upon the two fully-realised characters – brought to life with understated brilliance by Monnelly and Ní Neachtain.
Before the main movie, we’ve got a short film to kick things off.

THE BLUE CAFTAN
Director: MARYAM TOUZANI
Cast: Saleh Bakri, Lubna Azabal, Ayoub Missioui.
Film Info: 2022, 122 mins, France-Morocco-Belgium.
Halim (Saleh Bakri) and Mina (Lubna Azabal) run a traditional caftan store in one of Morocco’s oldest medinas. Halim is a maalem, a master tailor specialising in bespoke cutting and artistic embroidery, which means that the process of preparing garments is slow and expensive. In order to keep up with customer demands, they hire Youssef (Ayoub Missioui), a talented young apprentice who is eager to learn everything he can from his new mentor. He is also, as Mina suspects, a potentially disruptive force; Halim is secretly gay, and engages in clandestine encounters at the local hammam, a fact Mina is aware of, and the couple share a mutually supportive bond that has seen them through her recent cancer diagnosis. Slowly, however, Mina comes to realise how much her husband is moved by the presence of the young man.
